1. What is Adventure Racing?
Adventure Racing incorporates adventure, sports and nature into one multi-skilled activity. Events can include trail running, mountain-biking, cross country navigation, canoeing, kayaking, sea kayaking or rafting, to name just a few.

Adventure racing is a team event that requires teams to navigate a wilderness or urban course from a set start point via designated marked checkpoints to a set finish point.   The values of teamwork, communication and cooperation are central to the sport. The duration of an event may range from a few hours to several days. The course is revealed to competitors at least an hour before the race.

The Teva series requires basic navigation skills and incorporates the disciplines of mountain biking, trail running / trekking and fun obstacles.   The Teva championship also incorporates canoeing.

Adventure Racing is a relatively new sport, especially in Australia where it is still in its infancy.   However, as evidenced in the continued growing number of weekend warriors hitting the trails, it is one of Australia's fastest growing, and most exciting sports.

3. Who can enter?
The Teva Adventure Series races are for teams of three. Team categories include:

  • Mixed (male & female)
  • Male
  • Female
  • Corporate

Competitors must be at least 15 years of age, and in the spirit of Adventure Racing, teams need to work together for the entire course.   It's not a relay where teams complete legs on their own and there is no individual category.

The races are designed to be challenging and a lot of fun for people of a range of abilities. Anyone of a moderate fitness level, with basic navigation skills and the ability to ride a mountain bike should be able to complete the course within the six hour cut off.

Although there are no swimming legs it is possible there will be activities involving the water.    Therefore, competitors must have the ability to swim at least 50 metres (any stroke) unaided.

Our sponsors have supplied some great prizes for place getters as well as spot prizes for our 'let's have fun' racers.

4. What are the Rules?
You must complete the course and all challengs as outlined in the course information; without outside support, and as a team (you Must never be more that 100 metres apart and able to communicate verbally wiht each team member at all times). You must also obey all directions given by race officials on the day. If you have a strong cup of coffee you can read the full race rules in detail Race Rules.

5. Are Spectators Allowed?
Family and friends are welcome to come along and cheer you on. The event will start and finish from central location with teams passing through this area at least once during the event. This will be the best place to view the race.

If you have family and friends coming along who would like to be a part of the fun, consider asking them to volunteer as an event official so they can be a part of the adventure as well.

6. How Technical is the Mountain Biking?
The Mountain Biking will consists of fire trails, tracks and possibly some single track riding. The riding may have some technical aspects - however all mountain bikes including those without shockies should be able to make it through. The technical riding will be limited, but if If you aren't confident you can just dismount and walk these short sections and then carry on.

7. Will the course be marked or do I need to know how to navigate?
Competitors should have some basic navigation skills. If you can follow a street directory you should make it through the course. The more navigation skills you have the faster your team will travel.   A compass is a recommended piece of equipment to help orientate yourself.

8. Will there be drink stations on the course?
No, you will need to carry your own water.

9. I want to compete but can't convince any of my friends to do it. Where can I find a team mate?
Check out our Find a Team Mate page on the Teva Adventure Series website. You can connect up with other people looking for teams or complete the Team Mate Form to post your details.  Or try the looking at the Australian Adventure Racing notice board at www.sleepmonsters.com.au - There are always people looking to start or join teams. Post a message or respond to one that's already on there.

Try to find team mates who have the same goals as you.   For example some teams are out there to win, others are there to complete the course, and others are there just to have fun.

10. Do you have any tips on what clothing is best to wear?
What pants to wear in particular can be a bit of a dilemma. Most people opt to wear cycle pants (with or without padding). Others choose longer style "board shorts" that you can run in, and the legs don't get caught up in your seat when you ride.

A shirt made of 'wicking' fabric is good as you will get wet and sweaty throughout the race.

A hat is also a good idea.

There isn't really anywhere private to get changed in the transition area so consider this when choosing your clothes.
11. Is there any kayaking or canoeingin the event?
No, there is no kayaking or canoeingin the Series races but there will be either a kayaking or canoeing element in the Championship Event.   However, you may be required to build a raft and paddle around on a dam, or pull yourself across a creek on tyre tubes as part of the Series events.

13. Can our team be sponsored?
Yes, it's a great way to raise the profile of the sport in Australia or a great way for you to raise money for a charity. See the 'Race rules' for further information.

14. Cleats or Cages?
The big question. This is a hard one to answer and it will come down to what you are comfortable with.   In general if you are comfortable riding in cleats, you are best off wearing these and changing into runners for run legs.

HOWEVER - a lot of the competitive teams are opting for riding their bike with toe cages. This means they can save time swap from a bike leg to a run leg with out stopping to change shoes. Sometimes they will only make their final decision on the day after seeing the course.

There are 4 categories in the Teva Adventure Series. These include:

Premier Mixed
This is the premier category in adventure racing where the team is made up of both male and female competitors. Adventure racing is one of the few sports where girls and guys get to compete on the same level!

Male
A bit self explanatory.... a team of all guys!

Female
Same as above.... a team of all gals!

Corporate
An all new category has been added to the Teva Adventure Series in 2008. The corporate category is designed for teams from workplaces, clubs and organisations to have the opportunity to compete against others from their workplace and against other workplaces and organisations. Teams can be male, female or mixed.

Prizes will be awarded for winners in the corporate category, and bragging rights will go to the organisation who achieves the best overall result on the day (based on a team average point score). So whether it's 2 or 20 teams your workplace enters there's a chance to be our corporate champions on the day and have a whole load of fun outside of work as well!
